Hugo Martel
Research field : Formation and evolution of galaxies.
Description of the research project: Hugo Martel's research focuses on the origin and evolution of galaxies and the interaction of galaxies with their surrounding environment. His research is essentially theoretical and based on high-performance numerical simulations. The research program includes the following elements: 1) history of stellar formation and metal enrichment in the galaxy, due to the secular evolution of the latter; particular attention is paid to the effects of an active galactic bar or nucleus; 2) influence of the environment on the evolution of galaxies, including phenomena such as accretion of the intergalactic medium, minor mergers with other galaxies, disturbances caused by tidal forces, and loss of gas by ram pressure in dense environments; 3) injection of energy and metal-rich gases in the intergalactic medium through galactic winds, the spatial distribution of these metals, and the retroactive effect of galactic winds, and their influence on the subsequent formation of galaxies.
