Bourse d'excellence académique QS 2013François-René Lachapelle
Cette bourse décernée par Quacquarelli Symonds Limited, artisan du classement mondial des universités, dont la valeur est de 10 000 dollars, a pour but d'encourager un étudiant des cycles supérieurs promis à un avenir brillant dans le monde universitaire. François-René Lachapelle, étudiant au Département de physique de l’Université de Montréal, vient de débuter un projet de doctorat avec le professeur David Lafrenière. Le sujet principal de sa thèse portera sur les techniques d’observations astronomiques de lunes extrasolaires (ou exolunes) – c'est-à-dire de satellites orbitant autour d'une planète située à l'extérieur de notre système solaire.

Hubble FellowshipPier-Emmanuel Tremblay
Pier-Emmanuel Tremblay est le premier étudiant issu d’une université Québécoise à recevoir le prestigieux « Hubble fellowship ». Le programme « Hubble Postdoctoral Fellowship », du Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), est offert aux chercheurs postdoctoraux dont les recherches sont jugées exceptionnelles et sont en relation avec les activités de la NASA dans le domaine de la recherche scientifique des origines cosmiques.

Bourse du programme de stages internationaux du Fonds de recherche du Québec - Nature et technologies. Sean Griffin
Grâce à cette bourse, Sean poursuivra une collaboration entre l'Université McGill et l'Institut de recherche Bartol (BRI) à l'Université du Delaware aux États-Unis. Sean Griffin, aussi récipiendaire du Alexander McFee Fellowship (2013-2014), est membre de la collaboration VERITAS, un observatoire astronomique au sol spécialisé dans le domaine des rayons gammas. Il travaille depuis 4 ans à l'analyse des données VERITAS de sa thèse. Pendant le stage proposé, Griffin collaborera avec le professeur Jamie Holder du BRI. Le professeur Holder, porte-parole de VERITAS, est un leader mondialement reconnu dans le domaine de l’astrophysique des hautes énergies. Sean Griffin et Jamie Holder vont collaborer étroitement à l'analyse et l'interprétation de ces données, dont certaines ont été acquises en utilisant un filtre UV développé par Holder en collaboration avec le professeur David Hanna du Département de physique de McGill (et directeur de recherche de Sean Griffin).

Robert Lamontagne, executive director of the Observatoire du Mont-Megantic, lecturer at the physics department of the Université de Montréal, and member of the CRAQ, is one of the recipient of the grade of Knight from the Order of La Pléiade for 2013 (Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Pléiade, in french).

Top-10 of this year's scientific discoveries by Québec Science.Gilles Fontaine
Gilles Fontaine, his research team at the Université de Montréal and researchers at the Université de Toulouse (France) detected two Earth-sized planets around an old star, namely, a post red-giant star. Published in Nature, the discovery is particularly exciting for several reasons. "These planets are the smallest, the hottest, the closest to the host star, and the fastest that have been observed until now", said Gilles Fontaine. Many of the researchers involved in this discovery are former students of Prof. Fontaine, including Stéphane Charpinet, from the Université de Toulouse, who was leading the work. The two discovered planets are probably the remains of gaseous giant planets, like Jupiter, orbiting close to the host star when it was still burning hydrogen, in other words, before the star became a red giant. Gilles Fontaine and his team are in the 2012 annual top-10 of the journal Quebec Science.

Recipient of a scholarship from the international internship program of the FRQ-NTSebastien Guillot
With this scholarship, Sebastien will collaborate with the astrophysics group at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA), in Boulder, Colorado. Sebastien will work with Dr. Rosalba Perna, a world-renowned researcher in the fields of neutron star and gamma ray bursts research, as well as cosmology. Sebastien will focus on the determination of fundamental parameters of ultra-dense matter, almost exclusively composed of neutrons, and impossible to reproduce in Earth laboratories.
