Weakly coupled M-branes

M-theory is the strongly coupled limit of string theory and therefore its branes are described by strongly coupled field theories. But in recent times it has become clear that M2-branes have a natural weakly coupled limit. The key ideas in this development will be reviewed and some speculations offered on a possible theory of weakly coupled M5-branes.
