Disintegrating Asteroid is Raining Dust Onto a White Dwarf Star

Astronomers announced today that they have spotted a large, rocky object disintegrating in its death spiral around a distant white dwarf star. The discovery also confirms a long-standing theory behind the source of white dwarf “pollution” by metals. “This is something no human has seen before,” says lead author Andrew Vanderburg, a researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). “We’re watching the destruction of a solar system,” explains his colleague Patrick Dufour, a professor at the University of Montreal’s Department of Physics and member of the Institute for research on Exoplanets (iREx). Des astronomes photographient une exoplanète géante gazeuse plus jeune que Jupiter

Une des meilleures façons de comprendre comment notre système solaire a évolué est d’étudier des systèmes extrasolaires beaucoup plus jeunes que le notre. C’est ce qu’ont accompli des astrophysiciens de l’institut de recherche sur les exoplanètes (iREx) de l’Université de Montréal en collaboration avec une équipe internationale de chercheurs dirigée par le professeur Bruce Macintosh de l’Université Stanford. Grâce à l’instrument Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) sur le télescope Gemini sud de 8 m au Chili, l’équipe a pu prendre une image d’une exoplanète très semblable à la planète Jupiter mais beaucoup plus jeune.
